La Pinche Adultez is a duo of artists that delves into the complexities and implications of the transition to adulthood. Their works, showcased at the Acme Hall, explore the interstices between the rigid confines of adult routines, which are often dictated by schedules of productivity and efficiency.

In “Entras a mi cuarto a las 3:00 pm un sábado” (“You Enter My Room at 3:00 PM on a Saturday”), we encounter a scene where a woman lies bare-chested in her room, illuminated solely by the glow of her phone screen. Captured in a moment of escape, her attention is fixated on the digital stimuli emanating from her device, as she deliberately eschews the rituals of personal grooming and upkeep. Strewn around her are objects essential for navigating adulthood—some symbolizing control (a credential, deodorant, clothing), while others signify a loss of control (a vibrator, cigarettes, and alcohol). These items, amassed haphazardly and incongruously, immerse viewers in a state of apathy that feels unsettlingly familiar. The portrait serves as a stark reminder that, while we may diligently fulfill our obligations and responsibilities in the public realm, in our private lives, we often rebel against order and display resistance even in the execution of seemingly mundane tasks.

In “Hoy no salimos de casa” (“Today we don’t leave the house”), the artwork offers a glimpse into a realm of leisure and moral liberation, presenting an alternative to the constraints of adulthood. Within the scene, we encounter two languid women, accompanied by others who remain outside the frame. While one woman is engrossed in her phone, the other gazes directly at the viewer. In this moment of disconnection from societal expectations, they forge new emotional bonds, both with each other and with those sharing this recreational interlude in and around the bed, including observers of the scene. The bedroom, serving as a sanctuary in both artworks, emerges as a space for confession and intimacy, evoking empathy for divergences from the conventional adult experience.
